Resurreccion Maria de Azkue

Resurrección María de Azkue (1854–azkue, 1931) was a prominent Basque composer, musicologist, and ethnomusicologist, recognized for his significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of Basque folk music. His work is deeply rooted in the Basque cultural heritage, and he sought to collect and document traditional Basque songs, which were at risk of being forgotten. Azkue composed music that often reflected the folk traditions of the Basque Country, and his notable works include "Euskal Herriko Abestiak" (Songs of the Basque Country), which is a collection of Basque folk songs that he arranged for various ensembles. He also contributed to the development of Basque choral music and wrote music for theater. His impact on music lies in his role as a pioneer in Basque musicology; he helped raise awareness of Basque cultural identity through music during a time when regional identities were often overlooked. Azkue's efforts not only preserved traditional Basque music but also inspired future generations of composers and musicians to explore and celebrate their cultural roots. His legacy continues to influence Basque music and cultural initiatives today.
